Official visit of Dr. Hans Kluge, WHO Regional Director for Europe 

Dr. Hans Kluge, WHO Regional Director for Europe is on an official visit to Ukraine. He arrived on Sunday 13 December.

Dr. Hans Kluge and Dr. Gundo Weiler, Director of the Division of Country Support and Emergencies (CSE) , were met at the airport by Dr. Jarno Habicht, WHO Representative and Head of the WHO Office in Ukraine, and Viktor Liashko, Deputy Minister of Health, Chief State Sanitary Doctor of Ukraine.

Over the next few days, Dr. Kluge will meet with representatives of the government, the United Nations, health cluster partners and representatives of humanitarian organizations. The Director of the WHO Regional Office for Europe will also meet with health professionals at the forefront of the COVID-19 pandemic and visit the laboratory center where COVID-19 testing is conducted.

On the agenda - response to COVID-19 pandemic in Ukraine, vaccination and transformation of the health care system.

World Health Organization Ukraine: Plane with essential equipment for Ukraine humanitarian cargo landed in Boryspil international airport

There is almost a million of personal protective equipment items for medical workers on board of the plane. These supplies were delivered by WHO Regional Office for Europe, with funding from the European Union in Ukraine, and will cover the needs of 50 health care facilities for COVID-19 patients.

Head of the Operations Section “Local and Human Development” Department of the EU Delegation to Ukraine Frederik Coene and WHO Representative and Head of the WHO Country Office in Ukraine Dr Jarno Habicht met the plane with PPE at the Boryspil airport.

Better emergency health care for 40,000 people in eastern Ukraine

To improve the quality of health care services and reduce health risks for over 40,000 people in need in non-government controlled areas of Ukraine’s Luhansk region, WHO trained over 30 health workers on Advanced trauma care. The training focused on supporting emergency health care specialists in trauma emergency care and lifesaving procedures.

Preventing hospital-acquired infections in eastern Ukraine saves lives

To reduce the risk of infections acquired in hospitals, WHO is scaling up support to health facilities in the conflict-affected regions of Donetsk and Luhansk in eastern Ukraine.
