WASTEWATER TREATMENT PLANT STOPPED BY FIRE AND SHELLING/MINES

WASH Incident Report
Voda Donbasa (VD) informed the WASH Cluster that this morning, 30th August 2018, staff of the Dokuchaievsk Waste Water Treatment Plant (WWTP) heard explosions and saw thick smoke, due to the burning vegetation near to the site. Dokuchaievsk WWTP is located near the Line of Contact (LoC) and the area surrounding the site is mined, so it was not clear whether the cause was shelling or mines. The management of VD decided to stop the WWTP and to evacuate their staff immediately, due to risks to their safety.
This evening (6.00 p.m.) the situation is still not resolved and because the WWTP is not working all wastewater is going to special reservoirs, which will be full by tomorrow. After tomorrow wastewater will leak into the environment, affecting the Kalmus river, flowing downstream to Mariupol.
The population of Yasne and Dokuchaievsk is around 24 000 people (according to VD data). Volume of leaked sewage would be between 2.4 million and 4.8 million litres per day.
WASH Cluster is in touch with VD and will inform partners of any updates.
