2020 Torit County Multi-Sector Household Survey Report


The objectives of the multi-sector household survey are multi-fold:

  • To asses the conditions of housholds at the community level (payams)
  • To gain an overall and nexus/resilience oriented overall picture of Torit and Magwi county (this presentation will focus on Torit)
  • To promote a holistic, multi-sectoral understanding of the recent development (last 12 months) in the following fields:
  1. •Human development – Livelihood, Resilience, Food Security, Health, Hygiene, Education, Protection and Gender
  2. •Economy – Agriculture, Livestock Farming, Markets, Assets
  3. •Peace and Governance – Natural Resources, Safety, Migration, Community Participation & Local Governance and Aid


  1. with a core on  mainly on WFP/FAO-led Food Security and Nutrition Monitoring System (FSNMS) survey
  2. and a mix of questions from renowned regional resilience-oriented surveys: 1) UNICEF MICS (Multi Indicator Cluster Survey) survey; 2) Consortium for Improving Agriculture-based Livelihoods in Central Africa (CIALCA) Baseline Survey; 3) the Secure Livelihood Research Consortium (SLRC) Survey; 4) the RGAP Smallholder Household Survey and; 5) a study on natural resource management compiled by the Association on Strengthening Agricultural Research in Eastern and Central Africa (ASARECA).

Two-stage cluster sampling:

  1. •1st stage - selection of villages (based on probability proportional to population size (PPS) and stratification).
  2. •2nd stage - selection of households (based on “improved random-walk” method)

Sample size: 
40 villages (clusters) and 345 households were surveyed (well above FSNMS survey that is based on 80 to 120 surveys for 12 clusters per county) in order to provide Payam level references
