161020 Inter cluster assesssment on conflict in Gaalkacyo-Mudug region


The assessment teams used participatory focus group discussions; transect walks, observations and key informant interviews to the community including members of the Heads of Village Committees, elders, women groups, Sheikhs and youths to solicit information on the humanitarian assistance received so far, effects of the fighting and the challenges currently being faced by conflict affected people. The areas visited include the IDP settlements, market areas and villages in the outskirts of Gaalkacyo where displaced people have fled to.

Key findings: 

Authorities estimate the current population of Gaalkacyo at 250,000 people. According to the assessment team, an estimated 65,000 people have been displaced since fighting started on 7 October. Local authorities have estimated higher number of the displaced with south Gaalkayco alone having more than 70,000.
• An estimated 60 per cent of the displaced are IDPs facing secondary displacement from the settlements.
• Businesses are partially operating in some areas. However, businesses in the fighting area and adjacent settlements are completely closed and settlements vacated.
• People’s livelihoods especially among the poor host community and IDPs have been disrupted.
• Schools remain closed for the second week affecting over 20,000 learners
• Start of the rain season is compounding situation among the displaced.
• Displaced people need shelter/NFIs, food, water/sanitation services, health and protection related interventions.
