Rapid School Needs Assessment Report

Subject/Objective: 

The overall objective of the assessment was to gather information on the extent of the damage caused by cyclone Idai and the subsequent floods on schools to enable Plan International Mozambique to provide appropriate Education in Emergencies (EiE) response guided by the INEE and government standards in emergency response.

Methodology: 

The assessment was qualitative where key informant interviews with school Head/Deputy Teachers and teachers on specific areas were gathered including; school enrolments, classrooms, school teachers, WASH Facilities in schools, school supplies and trainings conducted for teachers before and after the cyclone.
Information was also gathered through observations on the damage to school infrastructures to check the extent of destruction of classrooms, WASH Facilities including toilets, water points in schools and solid waste management in the affected schools.

Key findings: 

The total enrolment in all 17 schools was 7,029 children with data from 3 schools not disaggregated by gender. The absence of gender disaggregated data in 3 schools made it impossible for the team to determine male & female ratios in the school enrolment. This enrolment figure reflects the pupil teacher ratio of 1:54 while the general pupil teacher ratio for Mozambique 2017-2018 indicate 1:68.
