Rokero Assessment - 25-29 April 2018


• To conduct humanitarian needs assessment, monitor population movements and determine type of humanitarian response to meet immediate needs.
• Identify existing resources and capacities of the IDPs and the host population.
• Establish and strengthen contacts with key stakeholders in the area (local authorities and CBOs).
• To open and pave way for extending humanitarian operations in North Jebel Marra locality.
• To establish and strengthen community participation with all stakeholders in North Jebel Marra locality.


The team held meetings with the local authorities, community leaders from IDPs and the host population, conducted focus group discussions with the IDPs and general observation to get an overview of the living conditions and overall situation of the newly displaced. The DIRA tool was used to collect the information .
After gathering the information, the team used debriefing sessions to cross check information and thereafter drafted the report and shared with team members for comments and feedback. This final report is under circulation after consensus on the findings with all team members including HAC.

Principales constatations: 

Population movements and affected areas
• An estimated population of 2,285 households/11,425 individuals fled their villages and are currently settled in Rokero town (coordinates: N 13° 16´ 45.4" E 24° 26´ 59.6) and Gemiza village (coordinates: N 13° 74´ 8.7" E 24° 27´ 44.7). Although others are reported to have moved further into surrounding villages and inside the Jebel Marra Mountains/caves, majority of the IDPs are in Gemiza village. Unconfirmed number of the IDPs are also reported to have fled back to Sortony and Tawilla in North Darfur. It is worth to note that all the newly displaced had started returning from Sortony and Tawilla IDP camps in March 2018 before the current wave of displacement.
• A total of 13 villages (Tawo, Togama, Molmal, Lugo, Araw, Sangara, Kawa, Spopenga, Salanga, Kormi, Healt Hassan Abdalla, Healt Haja Medina and Dongla) where the above mentioned populations fled from were mostly burned down and property looted and destroyed. These villages are located within North Jebel Marra (NJM) locality in Central Darfur State.
