    Ukraine Nutrition Cluster

The newly activated Nutrition Cluster (NC) in Ukraine works to provide life saving nutrition activities to the most vulnerable population, including infants, young children, pregnant and breastfeeding women as well as older people and adults with specific nutrition needs.

The cluster is creating a plan of action aligned with the revised flash appeal and calling for adequate funding to support the scaling up of nutrition interventions. The NC closely coordinates with the relevant clusters to include Health, WASH, protection and Food security and livelihoods considerations and ensure convergence of efforts.

The immediate key activities for the NC are:

  • Coordinate and monitor the nutrition response.
  • Develop and implement nutrition advocacy and communication plan covering priority messages and actions to priority audiences.
  • Support and facilitate partners set up of the Mother-Baby Friendly Spaces to protect and promote safe and appropriate Infant and Young Child Feeding practices and mitigate/minimise the risks of artificial feeding for the non-breastfed infants.
  • Support, promote and encourage breastfeeding and when no other alternative is possible, support the non-breastfed infants with UNICEF purchased infant formula while intervening to stop unsolicited donations and untargeted distribution of Breast Milk Substitutes.
  • Provide complementary age-appropriate feeding for infants and young children aged 6-23 months.
  • Support mothers of young children and pregnant women with adequate nutrition and supplements at the points of care.

IYCF-E Joint Statement for Ukraine

UNICEF, the Global Nutrition Cluster, and Partners call for ALL involved in the response to the Ukraine Conflict Crisis to protect, promote, and support the feeding and care of infants and young children and their caregivers. This is critical to support child survival, growth, and development and to prevent malnutrition, illness, and death. BMS Code Monitoring in Emergency Situations

The International Code of Marketing of Breastmilk Substitutes (BMS Code) and relevant World Health Assembly resolutions are operational in all situations. Communities that have been struck by emergency situations like war or natural disasters may encounter influxes of unsolicited supplies of breastmilk substitutes and other products that run counter to international guidelines. Usual marketing activities may take on different dimensions as companies try to reposition themselves in destabilised markets. Sometimes, it is non-governmental organisations or others involved in the humanitarian response, even governments that are directly violating the International Code rather than companies. Reports of Code violations in emergency situations will enable the right responses to be taken by policy makers and aid agencies.
