WASH Cluster Incident Report №83, 03/10/2017


According to Voda Donbasa (VD) water company, there was shooting from small and large-caliber guns near the 1st lift Pumping Station (PS) of the South Donbas Water Pipeline this morning (3rd October at 9 a.m.) and there were also explosions of artillery shells close to the pumping station. Also, it was reported that a Voda Donbasa emergency vehicle (a ZIL-131 truck), located near the pumping station at the time was fired upon while repair teams were trying restore water supply to Verkhnitotetske. During the incident, the emergency crew took refuge in a safe place, while staff of the pumping station were in their bomb shelter. The Pumping Station continued to operate in normal mode and fortunately there was no damage to critical PS equipment and no staff injured.

The 1st Lift PS of the South Donbas Water Pipeline supplies raw water (which originally arrives via the SDD channel) to five filter stations (December 2016 figures from Voda Donbasa:

Donetsk FS (supplying part of Donetsk, Yasynovata, Verkhnyotoretskoe, Krasnyi Partizan, Vasylivka, Spartak).  Donetsk Filter Station officially provides water to more than 345,000 people) and if it stops, either due to stoppage of the pumps upstream, or due to its own power being cut those people will rely on Verkhnikalmiuske FS, leaving Donetsk city with only a single filter station;
Krasnoarmiska FS (35 settlements in Krasnoarmisk(Pokrovsk) rayon) – 252 625 people;
Velykoanadolska FS (Volnovakha, Dokuchaevsk, Vuhledar, Novotroitskoe, Vladimirovka, Yasne and 4 villages) – 100 975 people; and
Starokrymska FS №1 and №2 (Mariupol) – 471 816 people.

Note that the last incident near this PS was recorded on September 13 (Incident report №82).
