WASH Cluster Incident Report №255, 14/05/2020

The WASH Cluster was informed of heavy shelling near Betmanove (former Krasnyi Partizan), on Thursday, May 14th, which started at 07:05 am and finished at 07:40 am. Sadly, as a result of the shelling, Panteleymonivka Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP), which is located in Betmanove, was badly damaged.  Solid objects removal rakes and the grit traps were damaged; one of the main buildings (reportedly for biofilters) received structural damage, and the laboratory/chlorinator building was also damaged.
Consequently, the wastewater flow of around 1,000 m3, which WWTP normally treats (from approximately 7,000 people, according to GP Voda Donbassa) is now flowing directly into the Kryvvyi Torets river, which flows (via Konstantinivka, Kramatorsk and Sloviansk) into the Siverskyi Donets river, which in turn supplies raw water to the people of Luhansk oblast at the Western Filter Station (WFS). The WFS supplies water to approximately 450,000 people. While the impact on drinking water treatment is likely to be manageable, there are obvious health risks associated with this flow of sewage into the environment, and it may well impact fish stocks in the Kryvyi Torets river.
Panteleymonivka WWTP belongs to GP Voda Donbassa (Donetsk, Yasynuvata, and Zuhres vodocanals).
The WASH Cluster is in touch with GP Voda Donbasa and will inform about any additional information or needs.
