WASH Cluster Incident Report №168, 08/02/2019

Dear All,

Sadly yesterday, on 8th February 2019 (at 16.00 Kiev time), a shell, suspected to be a grenade, landed and exploded near a transport vehicle carrying day shift workers home from the 1st Lift Pumping Station of the South Donbas Water Way (PS of SDWW). Luckily the shell did not hit the vehicle and shrapnel also missed, during the explosion. 14 staff of the Pumping Station, as well as the driver, were in the vehicle (15 people in total). This is now the 6th time already in 2019, that staff of the 1st Lift Pumping Station (located near Yasynuvata) have been affected by a violent incident. The Pumping Station and its staff are currently facing huge hazards, in the course of their work, and there is a real risk, now, that staff will refuse to operate the Pumping Station, due to the recent attacks.

The situation concerning the Pumping Station is now critical. The WASH Cluster repeats its call that civilian workers and infrastructure must be protected from damage or injury, by both sides, during the current conflict in eastern Ukraine.

The 1st LPS supplies water to five filter stations, between them providing clean water to more than 1.1 million people on both sides of the line of contact.

As always please feel free to ask the WASH Cluster team for clarifications, at any time.
