WASH Cluster Incident Report №106, 03/01/2018

BULLET HITS DONETSK FILTER STATION CHLORINE BUILDING

To our great regret, the WASH Clusrer is forced to report a new ceasefire violation near Donetsk Filter station (DFS). On 3rd January a bullet hit a window of the filter station, piercing wooden sheet (OSB) which was installed instead of glass, in the primary chlorination building.

Fortunately, there was no further damage identified, and no-one was in the room at the time. However 7.2 tons of liquid chlorine as was in the building at the time, reinforcing the need for both sides to avoid targeting such civilian infrastructure. Chlorine gas is poisonous. This incident also emphasizes the risks faced by utility company workers operating vital infrastructure close to the front line.

The Donetsk Filter Station supplies water to the following settlements: Avdiivka, Kruta Balka, Vasylivka, Mineralne, Yakovlivka, Verkhniotoretske, part of Yasynuvata and western areas of Donetsk city, and it officially provides water in total to 345,309 people (December 2016 figures from Voda Donbasa).

The WASH Cluster will report any specific needs or updates to WASH Cluster partners.
