Jabel Moon Inter‐Agency Assessment Mission Report: 1 ‐ 3 July 2019

Subject/Objective: 
  • Meet with local community to better understand the situation;
  • Collect data on returns;
  • Verify protection concerns;
  • Assess the overall humanitarian situation.
Key findings: 

The inter‐agency mission team has visited 4 return villages namely; Girgi Geirgi, Chilichil,
Delabaya and Khomi, visit to Bir Bataha village was canceled as it was difficulty to cross Kaja
wadi. A group discussion carried out with community and community leaders to assess and
address humanitarian needs. It was found that:

  • - Increasing number of returnees in all visited villages.
  • - The main activities and sources of incomes for the population of visited return villages
  • before the displacement was crop production and livestock breeding, currently the
  • community is depending on rainy season agriculture crops.
  • - As for the returnees in all visited village reported, most of the agricultural lands were
  • completely occupied by Arab tribes, preventing them from planting. This issue was
  • repeatedly raised.
  • - Conflict over water sources was reported in most of the villages visited.
  • - The top priority concern from the communities in each visited village is first security,
  • followed by access to water (specifically, hand pump rehabilitation), health services,
  • education and food. Gaps in water, health services, education and food were observed in
  • all visited villages.
  • - In all villages visited numbers of nomadic communities observed were estimated at 200
  • HHs.
  • - People with special needs (Elders and handclapped) are 150 people.
  • - Deploying more police to provide security are highly needed.
