INTER-AGENCY ASSESSMENT REPORT: Tawila Villages, Tawila Locality, North Darfur State 2-9 September 2015

Subject/Objective:
To assess the humanitarian needs of approx. 8,000 returnees reportedly returned from Tawila IDP camps to Mertal (an area composed of various village councils including Gosdor and Timoa) and Katur
Key findings:
- The school in Katur was destroyed during the attack on the area in early 2015. The classrooms need rehabilitation with roofing and fixing of windows and doors. - Based on observations during the visit, it was confirmed by some people in both Katur and Gosdor that the return process is voluntary and related to seasonal activities (cultivation). - GoS sources on ground estimate the total population of the area at around 5,000 persons, not 29,000 as reported by community leaders - ICRC has distributed assistance to 1,632households from three villages of Katur. - The only health unit in Katur has been completely destroyed. - IDPs spontaneously returned to Katur to cultivate their land but due insecurity they could not farm. - In Katur, the community relies on two hand dug shallow wells as main sources for water for both humans and animals.
