Deribat, Suni and Sundu Farta in East Jebel Marra Inter-Sector assessment mission - 19 to 23 February 2020

Subject/Objective:
  • To carry out rapid needs’ assessment in Suni and Sundu Farta.
  • To monitor the humanitarian situation in Deribat.
  • To negotiate recovery of a humanitarian asset (drilling machine) belonging to International Aid Service (IAS).
  • To continue engagement / access negotiation with  state and non-state actors.
Methodology:

The team used the Sudan Rapid Assessment tool to generate information during meetings organized with key informant leaders/groups, technical health and education staff, in addition to sectoral focus group discussions, observations and site visits.

Key findings:
  1. Deribat town is the capital of Deribat administrative unit which lies in the eastern part of Jabal Marra mountains, a rugged area with poor road access. It has an estimated population of 47.000 people whose main occupation includes farming and animal rearing. There are two markets in the area which operate once a week for up to three days. Part of the population is displaced from the government-controlled areas at the foot of the mountain towards Feina, and have lost access to their main source of livelihood which is agriculture, as their land is now occupied by government forces.
  2. Suni lies 20 km west of Deribat, with a population of about 10.000 people and has 10 village councils.  It’s predominantly an agricultural area with mangoes and oranges as the main cash crops grown. The terrain to the area is rocky and difficult to traverse. Trucks can only negotiate the rough terrain during the dry season. Only 4x4 vehicles have the capacity to navigate the terrain in both rainy and dry seasons.
  3. Sundu Farta, an SLA-controlled area, is about 23km north-east of Deribat, with 119 village councils and a population of about 47.000 people. The area is in north Darfur but can only be accessed from Deribat which is in South Darfur.
