PC Update: Grave Concerns for the Lives of Civilians in Kajo-Keji: Appeal for Immediate Ceasefire in Kajo-Keji, Freedom of Movement and Protection of Civilians, Land and Property

A protection cluster led assessment was carried out in Kajo-Keji on 23 February 2017 by UNHCR, UNICEF, OCHA and ARC. In conjunction with previous assessment and reports, the findings and recommendations are as follows:

There are immediate grave concerns for the lives of the remaining civilian population in Kajo-Keji, including; an extremely vulnerable population in the Kajo-Keji town area who do not have the physical capacity and/or financial means to reach the Ugandan border to seek international protection. This is also a related to the host community and thousands of IDPs in Liwolo payam; and for host communities living in other rural areas of Kajo-Keji.

Protection Situation Update: Outbreak of Conflict in Juba

At around 5pm on 08 July, fighting erupted in Juba between members of the Sudan People’s Liberation Army (SPLA) and the SPLA-In Opposition (IO). Over a period of four days, hundreds of people were killed, tens of thousands of people were displaced, and millions of dollars’ worth of humanitarian assistance was looted or destroyed. This Situation Update provides an overview of the first two weeks of the crisis and the protection impact on the civilian population.

The South Sudan Protection Cluster coordinates humanitarian protection activities for internally-displaced persons (IDPs) on community protection, gender-based violence, child protection, protection of civilians, rule of law, mine action and land issues across the ten states of South Sudan. The PC is co-led by the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) and the Norwegian Refugee Council (NRC). Meetings are held every two weeks on Tuesdays from 2 PM to 3 PM in the António Guterres Conference Room, UNHCR Compound, Ministries Road, in Juba.
