Somalia: Humanitarian Dashboard - November 2016 (issued 28 December 2016)

Humanitarian assistance continued across Somalia. In November, an estimated 466,100 people received food assistance, and more than 124,000 people were reached with activities aimed at building livelihoods. From August to November,1.8 million people received livelihood seasonal inputs such as seeds, tools, fishing equipment, irrigation vouchers and livestock distribution and vaccination. Between January and November, nearly 189,200 malnourished children under age of 5 were admitted into nutrition programmes. More than 900,000 Somalis received basic health services, while over one million people were provided with temporary and/or sustainable access to safe water. Over 200,000 people were assisted with safe sanitation and some 885,300 people were reached with hygiene promotion activities. Nearly 341,700 people were reached with protection services, while education partners reached some 92,700 learners with teaching activities and school feeding programmes. An estimated 146,800 people were assisted with non-food items and 13,300 with transitional shelter.

Drought has continued to affect the availability of water and pasture across the country, according to SWALIM. The AWD/cholera epidemic, which affected Balcad, Jowhar and Mahaday districts from 7 December, has been brought under control following concerted efforts by the authorities and health and WASH partners, with an 80 per cent decline in admission/treatment of the AWD/cholera cases. An AWD/cholera outbreak has been reported in Belet Xaawo District and Bacaad Weyne, south Gaalkacyo. Somalia’s request for nearly a million doses of Oral Cholera Vaccine has been approved by the Global Task Force on Cholera Control. Meanwhile, a mass measles vaccination campaign targeting 54,000 children, under age 10, in Kismayo, following a serious measles outbreak, is underway in southern Somalia.
