Major Oil Spill at Estancia

Subject/Objective: 
On Thursday 21 November, the UNDAC environmental emergencies expert undertook a joint environmental assessment with the Environmental Management Bureau of Iloilo of the oil spill from a barge owned by the National Power Corporation (NAPOCOR) after it broke loose and ran ashore at the height of typhoon Yolanda.

Main field assessment findings: • More oil continues to leak from vessel and spreads reportedly up to 10 km downstream; • Vapours at accident site raises major health concern; unconfirmed reports of people not returning from evacuation centres; • Urgent need for equipment and expert advise identified; • Possible threat to livelihoods and recovery of fisheries; • USEC of Health inspected site and expressed major health concerns.
