Winter Emergency: Sitrep No. 02 (13 - 16 January 2020)

Highlights

  • The number of districts in Balochistan have increased to 11 where emergency has been declared by the Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) on 13 January in Quetta, Ziarat, Pishin, Kila Abdullah, Kachhi (Kolpur area), Mastung, Harnai, Kila Saifullah, Loralai, Kalat and Kech after a spell of heavy rain and snowfall across the province. PDMA has sought for rescue, relief and rehabilitation activities through the humanitarian agencies following approval from the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA)/Federal Government
  • NDMA has reported that so far 100 people have died, around 90 injured and more than 200 houses damaged in Balochistan, Pakistan Administered Kashmir (PAK), Gilgit Balistan and Khyber Paktunkhwa provinces due to current wave of heavy rain/snowfall. The highest number of deaths (76) and injuries (53) were reported in PAK. Avalanches have occurred in various areas of Neelum Valley, located in PAK.
  • More than 300 persons trapped on the highway leading from Quetta to Kahnozai were rescued. PDMA distributed pre-cooked food and blankets among 7,000 travelers on various highways from 11 to 13 January. The authorities and National Highway Authorities are clearing highway and road blockages to restore access. Still several roads/highways in the affected districts are blocked. NDMA has shared the list of the blocked roads/highways.
  • Rescue efforts by PDMAs and district administration are currently ongoing. Three (3) helicopters are assisting in rescue and relief operations in PAK. Two additional helicopters have been deployed for evacuation in District Chaghi, Balochistan.
  • The government /NDMA / PDMAs and local partners have distributed food and non-food items including tents, blankets, first aid kits, solar lights, tarpaulins, plastic mats and mattresses in the affected areas of the provinces. Army Urban Search and Rescue team has reached PAK for search and rescue operation.
  • The government has not formally requested for international support and is responding to the situation.
