Nigeria North-East: Flash Flood Update, Jabilamba Girei LGA, Adamawa State

HIGHLIGHTS

  • More than 3,000 people have been displaced in Adamawa state by flash flooding that ravaged Jabilamba community and environs in Girei local government area (LGA). Many of the displaced households are seeking refuge in neighbouring towns across Song and Yola LGAs.
  • Between 18 and 19 August, flooding from heavy downpour claimed at least 10 lives and damaged or destroyed several homes, critical facilities, and livelihoods across Jabilamba and neighbouring towns. Three wounded residents are being treated in local hospitals
  • The floodwater has resulted in the contamination of water sources across the affected communities, heightening the risks of waterborne disease outbreaks.
  • The State and National Emergency Management Agency (SEMA and NEMA) are working to deploy emergency teams to conduct rapid assessments across the affected communities.
