Malawi Nutrition Update Issue No.18 January 2018

In the month of December 2017 reporting was at 100 percent. All the 618 Outpatient  Therapeutic Program (OTP) centres, 104 Nutrition Rehabilitation Units (NRU) and 611 Supplementary Feeding        Program (SFP) centres in Community-based  Management of Acute Malnutrition (CMAM) reported as follows:

*   3,742 children aged 6 to 59 months with Severe Acute Malnutrition (SAM) were  provided with lifesaving treatment in OTP centres  and  NRUs.

*  12,152 children aged 6 to 59 months with Moderate Acute Malnutrition (MAM) were provided with  treatment in the SFP centres.

* 3,639 Pregnant and Lactating Women (PLW) with MAM were provided with supplementary food at the SFP centres.

* There was a 1% increase in SAM admissions in December 2017 compared with December  2016.

* There was a 38% increase in MAM admissions in December 2017 compared with December 2016.

* The SAM death rate in the month of December 2017 was 2.7 % which is slightly higher than November 2017, but remains within SPHERE standards.
