CDEMA- Situation Report #1 - Adverse weather resulted in severe flooding in Trinidad & Tobago as of 10:00AM (AST) on October 22, 2018

The Situation

Resilience Way, Lower Estate, St. Michael, Barbados www.cdema.org Tel: (246) 434-4880, Fax: (246) 271-3660 On Friday October 19, 2018, torrential rains resulted in widespread flooding mainly in Eastern & Central Trinidad. The Trinidad and Tobago Meteorological Service (TTMS) issued an Adverse Weather Alert #3 – Orange Level for Trinidad and Tobago, extending the period from Thursday 18th October, 2018 at 10:00 a.m. to Tuesday 23rd October, 2018 at 6:00 p.m. The TTMS advised that an active Inter-Tropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ) continues to produce intermittent periods of rain/showers and thunderstorm activity which can lead to flash flooding and exacerbate existing riverine flooding. Showers can be heavy to torrential at times and produce damaging gusty winds. Landslides/landslips are also likely in areas so prone. Citizens are reminded that the Riverine Flood Alert #2 – Red Level is still in effect until Friday 26th October 2018 at 12:00 p.m.

Summary of Impact The CDEMA

Coordinating Unit remains in regular contact with the National Disaster Coordinator at the Office of Disaster Preparedness and Management (ODPM) in Trinidad and Tobago. There has been no request for external assistance however, the CDEMA CU continues to monitor the situation and will provide updates as necessary. The following is a report from the ODPM on the level of impact. The Ministry of Rural Development and Local Government (MORDLG) and the Ministry of Social Development and Family Services (MSDFS) will conduct initial damage assessments of all persons affected by the adverse weather. Assessments will be conducted from today Monday 22nd October, 2018. The National Emergency Operations Centre (NEOC) continues to coordinate the distribution of relief across Trinidad and Tobago.
