Indonesia: Emergency Response on West Kalimantan Floods - 10–16 November 2021 - SITREP #4

OVERVIEW

  1. A total of 12 sub-districts in Sintang Regency and 12 sub-districts in Melawi Regency, West Kalimantan (Kalbar) were submerged due to heavy rains which caused the water discharge of the Melawi River and Kapuas River to increase since October 21, 2021.
  2. In Sintang Regency, 7,545 families/25,884 people displaced in 32 evacuation points. The total affected people in Sintang Regency are ± 35,807 families / 124,497 people. A total of 35,1807 housing units were affected (in the data collection), 5 bridges were heavily damaged, 77 power substations were affected, 61 of which were still out.
  3. Floods in Sintang Regency claimed the lives of 4 people. The water level (TMA) is monitored in the range of 100-500 Cm. The Sintang District Government has established an Emergency Response Status for 30 days until November 16, 2021
  4. In Melawi Regency, based on data compiled by PUSDALOP BNPB, there were 4 people died, 28,278 families / 108,455 people were affected, 753 of whom were displaced. A total of 27,621 housing units and 104 public facilities were affected in Melawi Regency. TMA is observed in the range of 100-400 cm.
  5. Reports from the BPBD of Sintang Regency, several displaced person were affected by an outbreak of vomiting and asked for treatment at the nearest Puskesmas.

CARITAS RESPONSE

  1. From November 5 to November 16, 2021, Caritas Diocese of Sintang is assisted by Parish Volunteers, Congregations, Catholic Youth, Parish Volunteers, and Cross Commissions to distribute food logistics in the form of rice, cooking oil, canned food, and instant noodles as well as medicines.
  2. A total of 2,963 aid packages reached affected families in 21 villages in 8 sub-districts in Sintang district, and 3 sub-districts in Melawi district.
  3. Caritas Archdiocese of Pontianak supports Caritas Diocese of Sintang response by sending 6,000 kg of rice, 800 boxes of instant noodles, 1,200 liters of cooking oil.
  4. Sintang Diocese supports food packages worth IDR50,000,000, Caritas Indonesia – KWI supports food aid worth IDR100,000,000, and the procurement of fiber boats worth IDR57,000,000. PSE – KWI also supports IDR50,000,000 for the procurement of fiber boats to help with logistics distribution.

URGENT NEEDS

Clean water, sleeping equipment, food ingredients (rice, cooking oil, sardines, instant noodles, shallots/white onions, salt), cooking fuel, toiletries, and emergency lamps.

COORDINATION

  1. Coordinate with Caritas Indonesia's ER-DRR unit
  2. Coordinate and collaborate with Caritas Archdiocese of Pontianak to fulfill logistics from Pontianak City.
  3. Caritas Sintang Diocese seeks a Caritas response that is coordinated with the BPBD of Melawi Regency and Sintang Regency.
