Indonesia: Emergency Response on Central Kalimantan Floods - 9 – 10 September 2021

update from the Emergency Response of Central Kalimantan Floods by Caritas Indonesia and its National Network through Sitrep #02 attached.

OVERVIEW

  • The flood in the Katingan Regency, Central Kalimantan, affected 15,439 housing units,67 places of worship, 78 educational facilities, 36 health facilities, 40 office units, and 19 PPKM posts.
  • The Palangka Raya Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBD) reported that the 4 wheeled vehicles cannot pass through the provincial main roads, while the 2-wheeled vehicles should be helped by local small boats to cross the water.
  • The total number of IDPs currently is 112 people, concentrated in 4 locations:
    1. Kasongan Lama Village, 2 locations
    2. Banut Kalanaman Village, 1 location
    3. Petak Bahandang Village, 1 location

CARITAS RESPONSE

  • Caritas Diocese of Palangka Raya has opened an emergency response post in the house of The Canossian Sisters, Kasongan, and published a fundraising flyer that has been published on the Caritas Indonesia network.
  • Caritas Diocese of Palangka Raya has also accessed the National APP emergency fund of IDR 100,000,000 to provide necessities and foods to open a public kitchen.
  • On September 10, 2021, the Caritas Diocese of Palangka Raya distributed food packages and ready-to-eat food to several villages that had not received assistance from the government. Caritas Diocese of Banjarmasin Diocese, as the nearest Caritas today will also distribute aid to Palangka Raya.
  • Caritas Indonesia invites the national network to participate in this flood emergency response through fundraising, and actively communicates and provide technical assistance to the Caritas Diocese of Palangka Raya during the emergency response period.

URGENT NEEDS

  • Caritas Diocese of Palangka Raya has conducted a needs assessment in Katingan Regency and found the most needed by the affected communities are foods, temporary shelter, bedding and blankets.

COORDINATION

  • In coordination with the PSE Commission and the JPIC of the Diocese of Palangka Raya to form an emergency response team for the Diocese of Palangka Raya with Caritas as the response coordinator (attached).
  • To coordinate with the Caritas Diocese of Banjarmasin in carrying out joint emergency response, and with the Caritas Indonesia's ER-DRR unit to obtain technical assistance and provide up-to-date information.
