Inter cross-sectoral assessment

Subject/Objective:
UNICEF is working in support of the Fijian Government on its priorities. Initial cross-sectoral assessments by Government have commenced in conjunction with first response. Assessment teams travelling to outer islands are not expected to report back for a bout a week. This is due to the distances and weak or non-functioning communications. The teams travelling by truck or boat are taking emergency supplies with them. UNICEF is assisting with assessment planning and have joined six Government assessment missions.
Key findings:
117 schools have been damaged. 67 of these schools received significant structural damage. 64 further schools are being used as evacuation centers disrupting classes. Schools which were significantly damaged will take 2 to 6 months to repair.
