Ethiopia: Rapid Market Assessment on the impact of COVID19 and the Desert Locust Infestation in Borana, Guji, Filtu, Dawa & S. Omo Zones [EN]

Subject/Objective:

Introduction

Livestock based livelihoods provide the major income source for pastoral and agro-pastoral communities. The desert locust infestation compounded by COVID-19 restrictions have reduced market demand for livestock and livestock products, illustrated by the stagnation in market prices1. The condition of livestock has decreased due to reduced grazing, a direct consequence of the desert locust infestation. Movement restrictions, due to COVID-19, have disrupted supply chains of essential productive inputs and services, for both livestock and crop market systems. The concurrent shocks have led to destruction of food crops and grazing and increased the size of herds due to a lower level of off-taking (demand). It is anticipated that there will be a higher demand for productive inputs and services and increased pressure on already depleted pasture.

Methodology:

The Rapid Market Assessment was conducted in June and July 2020 by the RIPA team in Borana, Guji, Filtu, Dawa and S. Omo Zones, with pastoralists and agro-pastoralists and businesses which were purposefully selected across all zones. The rapid market assessment was not designed to be rigorous pieces of research based on large sample sizes. Instead, the surveys which used key informant interviews were designed to provide an insight into how livestock and crop market systems and their players have been affected by COVID 19 restrictions and the desert locust infestation, and to provide direction for priority responses. It is well understood that many of the constraints identified will have been present pre COVID 19 and desert locust infestation. Where appropriate, data was analyzed by livelihood type (pastoral or agro-pastoral), gender & age and zone.
