Key issues: 

  • Since the beginning of the year, more than 30,000 people have been displaced by conflict across the country.
  • Authorities in Wardak Province reported a potential outbreak of bird influenza, the second occurrence in Afghanistan in 2018.
  • UNHCR resumed its voluntary repatriation programme from Pakistan on 1 March. Since the beginning of the year, 180 refugees have chosen to return to their home country, the majority from Iran.
  • During the past week, more than 20,000 people in need received some form of humanitarian assistance across the country.
  • The complex attack in the past week on the police station in Spinboldak, Kandahar, did not affect the humanitarian activities at the border crossing with Pakistan.
