Key findings:

Findings showed that the prevalence of Global Acute malnutrition (GAM), based on WHZ for
those 4 districts in Paktya, was 5.2 % (CI: 4.1- 6.7). GAM based on MUAC was 6.6% (CI: 4.8-
9.0). The rate of severe acute malnutrition (WHZ<-3 score and/ or oedema) was 0.6 % (CI: 0.3-
1.3). The prevalence of stunting among children 6-59 months, was 31.7 % (CI: 27.9 - 35.8), out
of which, 12.5 % (CI: 10.1 - 15.4) was severely stunted. The crude mortality rate (CMR) was
0.48 death/10,000/Day (CI: 0.21-1.09) and under 5 mortality rate was 0.30 death/10,000/Day
(CI: 0.18-0.49).
Based on the WHO thresholds, the current findings indicate that the acute malnutrition rate in
Paktya remain poor while chronic malnutrition is of serious concern. The overall IYCF
indicators were also worrying especially the two core indicators: excusive breastfeeding and
introduction of solid, semi-solid or soft foods (complementary feeding). Overall health
indicators were in the acceptables levels, except the iron/folate supplementation coverage
for pregnant women. Common 2-weeks recall illness among children under five was high:
19.9%.
